DO's and DON'Ts
Do...
Have a good support system. Whether you know it or not, you are going to need help. Supportive people come in many forms such as family, church members, positive friends, mentors, etc. Whomever you choose to surround yourself with, make absolutely sure that they are looking out for your best interest. In other words, make sure you can trust them to steer you in the right direction. Keep these people close and let them know what is going on with you so they can help you when you need it.
Have a good plan. In order to accomplish anything, you must first have a goal. A goal could be furthering your education or as simple as paying off all the restitution and fees you may owe. Working with a mentor to make sure your decisions are leading you to accomplish your goals is the most practical approach. To find a mentor, just identify someone you respect and ask them for their input. (If you are willing to voluntarily mentor someone or need a mentor, contact us with your request and we will try to assist you. Please provide a contact number).
Use the resources available to you. Various programs exist to help you depending on the state where you are located. Non-profit organizations can be a great place to get valuable information. Check out some of the programs we have listed on this site.
Have a good attitude. What makes us unique as human beings is our ability to make decisions. You always have a choice. Choosing to have a good attitude will help to make your transition easier and most likely more successful.

Don't...
Waste time. There is so much to catch up on. Technology is moving at light speed. Keep yourself informed and make sure to have basic knowledge on essentials like searching the internet and learning to communicate through email.
Fool yourself. Be honest with yourself about your situation. Life is tougher now than ever before. Celebrating your new found freedom by hooking up with old friends can be detrimental. Not everyone has changed and making the same bad decisions will only lead you back to where you came from. Consider working with a mentor, as mentioned above, as part of your plan.
Give up. Remember your future depends on your choices and your decisions. You will make it by being persistent on your journey to success by not letting others influence you down the wrong path. You and only you are responsible for your actions. Be a good example and be a good role model. There is usually always someone looking up to you whether you realize it or not.
